किसी भी भूखंड को खरीदने से पहले निम्न तरीकों से परीक्षण किया जा सकता है-
जिस भूखंड को खरीदना चाहते हैं उसके उत्तर दिशा में डेढ़ फुट गहरा गडढ़ा खोदें और उसमें उपर तक पानी भर दें। तदुपरान्त 2 मिनट बाद गडढ़े के पास आकर देखें। गडढ़ा पानी से भरा हो तो उत्तम, आधा भरा हो तो मध्यम और पानी नहीं बचा हो तो अशुभ।
भूमि में 24 अंगुल गहरा गडढ़ा खोदकर पुनः उस गडढ़े को उसी मिट्टी से भर दें। यदि गडढ़ा भरने के बाद मिट्टी बचती है तो उस भूमि को उत्तम, मिट्टी पूरी पड़ने पर मध्यम और अगर मिट्टी कम पड़ जाये तो उस भूमि को अशुभ माना जाता है।
विश्वकर्मा रीति के अनुसार एक गडढ़ा खोदकर उस गडढ़े को चारों ओर से लीप कर उसमें कच्ची मिटटी के चार दीपों में घी के दिये जलाएं। और देखें कि किस दिशा की बत्ती अधिक प्रकाश दे रही है यदि उत्तर दिशा का दीप अधिक प्रकाश दे रहा हो तो वह भूमि ब्राह्मण, पूर्व का अधिक प्रकाशमान हो तो क्षत्रिय, पश्चिम का दीप अधिक प्रकाश दे रहा हो तो वैश्य एवं दक्षिण के दीप में अधिक प्रकाश दे रहा हो तो शूद्र वर्ण वाले के लिए उपयुक्त होती है।
