जैसा कि आपको ज्ञात है कि मनुष्य एवं ब्रह्माण्ड की रचना पाँच तत्वों से हुई है-
1. पृथ्वी
2. आकाश
3. जल
4. अग्नि तथा
5. वायु
जीवन के लिये इन सभी तत्वों का अत्यन्त महत्व है। प्रोटीन, वसा, शक्ति, ध्वनि आदि चीजें हमें इन्हीं तत्वों के द्वारा प्राप्त होती हैं। मानव जीवन में यदि इन सभी तत्वों का सन्तुलन होता है तो वह सुख-शान्ति के साथ प्रसन्नतापूर्वक अपना जीवन व्यतीत करता है।
और अगर इनका सन्तुलन नहीं है तो मानव की बुद्धि विपरीत हो जाती है, उसमें अवसाद, तनाव, अस्वस्थता, शारिरिक परेशानियां बढ़ जाती हैं। बिल्कुल इसी तरह प्रकृति में इसी प्रकार का असंतुलन होने से बाढ़, तूफान, अग्निकांड, भूकंप आदि प्रकार की प्रलंयकारी आपदायें घटित होने लगती हैं। मनुष्य का शरीर जोकि पांच तत्व से निर्मित होता है और पुनः पंाच तत्वों में विलिन हो जाता है।
भवन का निर्माण भी पंच तत्वों के द्वारा होता है। और उस निर्माण में यदि यह पंच तत्व असंतुलित होते हैं तो उस भवन में निवास करने वाले व्यक्ति को भी विभिन्न प्रकार की परेशानियां जैसे सामाजिक, मानसिक, शारीरिक, आध्यात्मिक या आर्थिक विषयों से सम्बन्धित परेशानियां उसके जीवन में आ जाती हैं।
आकाश अनंत है, ब्रह्माण्ड में ऐसी कोई जगह नहीं है जहां आकाश न हो। गुरूत्वाकर्षण, चुम्बकीय बल, पराबैंगनी किरणें, प्रकाश किरणें, विकिरण, ग्रहों की किरणें, इन्फ्रारैड किरणें इत्यादि सभी आकाश तत्व में विद्यमान होती हैं।
ध्वनि का अहसास भी इसी आकाश तत्व के द्वारा होता है, यानि आकाश तत्व कि बिना ध्वनि का भी वजूद नहीं है। भवन में निर्मित दीवारों के द्वारा भवन को आकाश तत्व की प्राप्ति होती है। मकान की दीवारें छोटी होने पर भवन में रहने वालों के लिये घुटन का अहसास कराती हैं, वहां आकाश तत्व का समुचित विकास नहीं हो पाता।
अतः मकान इस तरह बनाना चाहिये कि भवन में प्रकृति से मिलने वाले दृश्य, ऊर्जा व रोशनी पर्याप्त मात्रा में मिलती रहे।
