पृथ्वी की उपरी सतह, इसकी आकृति अथवा मिट्टी अलग-अलग स्थानों पर अलग-अलग तरह की होती है। पृथ्वी में स्पर्श, शब्द, रस और रूप के अतिरिक्त गंध रूपी विशेष गुण भी विद्यमान हैं। मिट्टी, सतह की आकृति, रूप, रंग, गंध आदि का जीवन पर क्या प्रभाव पड़ेगा, मकान बनाते वक्त इस बात का खास तौर पर ध्यान रखना चाहिये।
